On Monday, 27 November, unbox-it organised the event ‘How to get published in magazines and newspapers’ at our office in Trafalgar Square.
The event had 3 great speakers; Mirela Sula, editor-in-chief of Global Woman Magazine, Emma Sheppard, journalist at The Guardian, and Jenna Gould, head of PR @ unbox-it.com.The three panelists kicked off the night with motivational and informative talks, opening up afterwards to give advice and answer any questions from all attendees.
The audience was very keen to learn how to be published in magazines and newspapers. Engaging with the speakers and asking lots of questions, the night started with everyone networking and speaking to each other. Sixty-five entrepreneurs, from startups to established businesses, turned up to hear out great speakers and absorb their expertise about the PR industry.
The night kicked off with Mirela, inspiring the audience with her life story and can-do attitude. Mirela is a force of nature with the most inspirational and motivational attitude in this world. Mirela has won many awards, including the “Inspirational Women of the Year”. If you have an entrepreneurial spirit with great ideas, but you’re having trouble getting up of the couch and taking those first steps, hearing Mirela speak is something you need to put on your to-do list!
Mirela begins by sharing her life story and talks about how she put in the hard work to build her Global Woman Magazine business. Most importantly, she makes you aware that you are just as capable as anyone.
Mirela’s story is so inspirational. I have been thinking of launching my business for 4 years and have not done so because of so many “excuses”. After hearing Mirela I feel that I should launch my business tomorrow.

The presentations continued with Jenna, Head of PR at Unbox-it.com, sharing her expertise on how to get published in magazines. Jenna’s top 6 tips from the evening were:
Jenna has over 10 years of experience in PR and has worked for Saatchi and Saatchi, one of the world’s most renowned PR and advertising agencies in the world.
Jenna’s presentation was great, full of advice and guidance transferable to the real world. The attendees at the event really enjoyed her presentation, many taking photos of the slides so they could save and revise the content-rich presentation later.
Following up from Jenna, was Emma Sheppard, from The Guardian newspapers. Emma’s presentation showed the other side of PR. While Jenna writes the press releases and sends them to journalists to get the story published, Emma is the receiving end of the email. She has the final say if the press release is good enough to be published or not. With Emma’s inside eyes, shes supplies the attendees with the tools to successfully get a journalists’ attention.
Emma’s presentation had 6 key points to be followed if you wanted to get journalists’ attention:
- Be selective
- Be prepared to talk
- Be patient
- Offer a new perspective
- Don’t take offence

The evening was such a success! Attendees and speakers alike were so enthused in the conversations and topics that no one wanted to leave. Looks like were booking more time for the next event!
